Tourism activity in a destination is often a driver of development, triggering desired investment and employment opportunities. To contribute to the desired development objectives of destinations while fostering sustainability, it is important to regularly monitor and evaluate economic benefits, including the return on their investment, direct and indirect effects on employment, taxes earned from tourism businesses and any increase in asset values (land and infrastructure prices). In addition, tourism often causes indirect economic benefits through the development of support services and increased opportunities in other industries ranging from food and agriculture to crafts and construction.
Indicators of the economic effects of tourism activity on a destination range from measuring employment, business investments, tourism receipts, community expenditures to leakage aspects. Many of these aspects are considered in the Tourism Satellite Account, the statistical framework used as a standardised tool to measure the direct economic contributions of tourism consumption to a national economy.
This eighth technical webinar will discuss the experiences and lessons learned by Members of the UNWTO International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO) in the field of measuring and monitoring economic benefits. The webinar is directly derived from the 11 key thematic areas mandatory for INSTO Members.
