The Department of Tourism of Consell de Mallorca held a new Forum on Tourism Governance and Sustainability in Mallorca this Friday at the Bunyola Municipal Theater. This forum is the second of several to be held throughout 2025 in different regions of Mallorca.
Throughout the day, attendees were able to listen to, participate in, and debate the future strategies and objectives that the Island Tourism Directorate, created during this term and focused on governance and sustainability, has for Mallorca. Both its head, Pedro Mas, and the Minister of Tourism, José Marcial Rodríguez Díaz, outlined the main guidelines governing the department's term during the forum. Along these lines, the President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, was responsible for opening the forum and during his speech, he stated that "collaboration with city councils and the tourism sector is a commitment of our mandate to promote a responsible tourism model that is respectful of our environment and the people of Mallorca. And spaces like these allow us to share knowledge and create synergies that help us advance toward this goal."
The day continued with an opening address by Joan Tomàs Baos, Deputy Mayor of the Bunyola City Council. Pedro Mas then presented his department's roadmap and the objectives for the term. He announced that, since the beginning of the term, he has already visited "all of Mallorca's city councils, held more than 100 technical meetings with the institutions, and, in addition, we have 19 of our own projects underway through this new island directorate that I lead, which aims to highlight the work of the city councils and help them."
Mas also detailed that his island administration is currently managing a total of 19 projects in the Serra de Tramuntana region. These projects are divided into three PSTDs (destination tourism sustainability projects), nine CBAT (Consortium of Tourist Accommodation Exchanges), and seven grants to promote tourism information in the municipalities. All of these grants are worth €5.1 million.
Following the opening remarks and Pedro Mas's remarks, a report on the economic, social, and environmental situation of the Serra de Tramuntana region was presented by the Dean of the UIB Faculty of Tourism, Tolo Deyà. Three roundtable discussions followed: one on the tourism model of the Serra de Tramuntana, another on the impact of seasonality in the area, and finally, one on youth and talent in the tourism sector.
The Minister of Tourism was responsible for closing the forum and, during his speech, stated that his department's "commitment is to promote a responsible tourism model within our environmental and social limits" and that "this is where tourism governance plays an important role, because it is essential to work in the destinations."
Rodríguez pointed out that "the active participation of the community and the sector in decision-making regarding tourism is fundamental. And, therefore, the role of local governments is crucial."
